Chapter V
An Ugly and Beautiful Planet
Landing on this planet was less than graceful (Yuutoko had accidentally broken the hover function in the mechanism room). The ship hovered for a few seconds but then it dove nose-first into the ground. Fire Heart and Yuutoko were tossed all around in their seats like rag dolls.
“A-are we dead?” Yuutoko managed to choke out.
“I don’t know. Let’s check,” Fire Heart smacked Yuutoko across the face.
“Ow! What was that for?” Yuutoko shouted now rubbing her reddening cheek.
“Well, we’re definitely alive,” Fire Heart unbuckled her seatbelt and got up, “Let’s see if we can walk.”
“Not a bad idea,” Yuutoko got up as well and followed Fire Heart, “So what planet is this?”
“I don’t know,” Fire Heart answered, “It didn’t recognize the solar system.”
“Maybe it’s Popil or something,” Yuutoko suggested, “If that’s the case, we don’t have to worry about a thing! Popiles are pretty weak and, not to mention, tasty!” Yuutoko licked her lips eagerly.
“I don’t think this is Popil,” Fire Heart observed out the window, “Their plants are blue. Look at how green those are!”
“Huh,” Yuutoko stared out the window, “They look almost like Yashian plants only much more rough and ridged. I’d like to see what they’re made of.”
“Good because you’re going out first,” Fire Heart said.
“What? Why me?” Yuutoko exclaimed.
“Someone has to test if the air is toxic to us or not,” Fire Heart said in a matter-of-factly way, “And since you’re the hardened serial killer, and us crashing here is technically your fault, it’s better you than me!”
“Wait, is this about me killing your guys? For the last time, I’m sorry! Can’t we talk this over?” it was too late, Fire Heart had already shoved Yuutoko into the airlock, “Hey! Get me out! Fire Heart! Can you hear me? Get me out of here you stupid Tegisaigan!”
Yuutoko pounded on the door with all her might. She was about to yank her choker off again when the door to the outside opened. Yuutoko feared the worst, so she held her breath. Yuutoko was about to rip Fire Heart apart with her powers, but she was gone. Yuutoko’s lungs gave way and she was forced to take a breath. To her surprise, the air was not toxic at all; it was perfectly breathable if not a little hot and humid.
“Man, why is this planet so freaking hot?” Yuutoko moaned, “If we’re stuck here, I’m gonna go crazy if I don’t melt first.”
The door opened again and Fire Heart stepped out, “Hey this planet’s nice! The air feels just like Tegisaiga’s! It’s very nice!”
“Speak for yourself, Tegisaigan!” Yuutoko shot reproachfully. Yuutoko then wandered around the ship and gazed out at the vast landscape. They had landed atop a cliff overlooking vast, tropical forests and an ocean in the horizon. The sky was a lovely, light pink as the gold sun began to rise and bathe the world in its light.
“Wow,” Yuutoko gazed dreamily at the setting, “is this… some sort of paradise planet? It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my—Ack!” Yuutoko was dragged into the foliage.
“Shh!” Fire Heart covered Yuutoko’s mouth, “Be quiet! And don’t stand out in the open like that! You’ll stick out like a sore thumb!”
Yuutoko yanked Fire Heart’s hand away from her mouth, “You’re on thin ice, Tegisaigan! Really thin ice!”
“There’s someone coming!” Fire Heart ducked behind a tree, “Hide yourself!”
Fire Heart and Yuutoko watched two beings from behind their trees. One was apparently a popil (identified by her smaller body and purple streaks in her blond hair), but the other being could not be identified. The other being had light blond hair, somewhat dark skin, and golden eyes. She wore intricate clothing and a somewhat distant expression on her face. The two beings examined the ship before the unidentified one turned in their direction.
“I know you’re there,” she said in plain Yashian, “Do not be afraid of us. We mean you no harm. Come out so we may speak face to face.”
“They know your language. I think it’s safe Yuutoko,” Fire Heart turned to the tree where Yuutoko was hiding, “Yuutoko?” Fire Heart searched around until she heard the popil cry out in pain. Fire Heart looked over and saw Yuutoko biting down on the popil’s little shoulder.
Fire Heart ran out and smacked Yuutoko on the back of her head, forcing her to let go, “Stop that! These people are trying to help us! That was very rude!”
“Ow! What is it with you and hitting me today?” Yuutoko rubbed the back of her head, “You know what, I’m sick of your attitude! I should just rip you apart right now, Tegisaigan!”
“Try that and I’ll burn you,” Fire Heart threatened.
“Ha! I’d love to see you try!” Yuutoko challenged. Fire Heart created a wall of fire around her causing Yuutoko to shut her mouth.
“I’m sorry about my companion,” Fire Heart apologized, “She’s not exactly the friendliest person in the universe.”
“No offense is taken,” the other being replied.
“Any way, we’re not supposed to be here,” Fire Heart started, “We’re supposed to be going to Tegisaiga. Do you know where I could get my ship repaired?”
“I’m afraid no such technology exists that could help you on this planet,” the other being said, “I’m afraid you may be stuck here for the time being. I may not help you with your ship, but I can give you a place to stay and something to eat. Would you like that?”
“If we’re not leaving any time soon, I guess that’s the next best thing,” Fire Heart shrugged.
“Follow me then,” the other being turned around and began walking down a forest path.
As they walked, the unidentified being and the popil conversed with one another in an unknown language. Fire Heart couldn’t tell what they were saying, but they seemed to be debating over whether she and Yuutoko were dangerous or not. Needless to say, it was awkward.
“So,” Fire Heart started, “are you a native to this planet?”
“No,” the other being answered, “I just arrived here a couple days ago myself.”
“Do you have any idea where we are then?” Fire Heart asked.
“The natives call this planet Earth,” the other being answered, “The land we walk on is called Hawaii.”
“Earth?” Fire Heart shook her head, “It sure isn’t a planet I’ve ever heard of. To what planet does the Earthian empire extend to.”
“Just this one,” the other being answered, “The natives have barely even wandered into space. They have only ever been to their moon.”
“Sounds like a great, stupid bunch to me!” Yuutoko muttered.
“Actually, I think they’re quite lovely,” the other being said, “I’ve wanted to live among them for quite some time now. Coming here and being accepted by them is a blessing to me.”
“You must set some pretty low standards there,” Yuutoko snorted.
“Yuutoko that was rude!” Fire Heart chided, “These people came to our rescue! At the very least, you can show them some gratitude!”
“I’ll show them plenty of gratitude by giving them a quick and painless death if I feel like it!”
“You’re still in debt to me, you know!” Fire Heart reminded, “If you do respect your own honor code, you’ll stop killing without a good reason!”
“Is annoyance a good reason?”
“No!”
“You just keep making this more difficult, don’t you?” Yuutoko began to pout.
“We have arrived,” the other being indicated a large house in their path.
“Wow! This house is huge!” Fire Heart marveled.
“Yes,” the being used a key to unlock the door, “Please come inside.”
“It’s even better on the inside!” Fire Heart turned to Yuutoko, “Don’t you think this place is amazing?”
“Yeah, I guess so,” Yuutoko turned to the other being, “Hey, could you get us something to eat here? I’m starving!”
“Understandable,” The other being replied, “I’ll get you some food immediately. Please sit down.”
Yuutoko sat down in one of the chairs and put her bony feet up on the table. She leaned back in the chair relaxed until Fire Heart brushed her feet off the table.
“That’s not polite!” Fire Heart knocked Yuutoko’s feet of the table, “These nice people brought us to this nice house! At the very least you could show more respect to the furniture!”
“Nice people huh?” Yuutoko started, “How do you know they’re nice? They could be plotting against us you know. They could just want to use us.”
“They are not!” Fire Heart responded, “I can just tell they’re nice! It’s all in their eyes!”
“Really? ‘Cause they look like every other thing that’s tried to use me!” Yuutoko looked over at the popil trying to hide herself in the corner, “We should just destroy them now before they have the chance to do anything to us!”
Fire Heart stopped Yuutoko before she had the chance to lunge, “Okay, I admit you have every right to be cautious, but we don’t need to take any sort of brash action. Only attack if attacked! We don’t need any more unnecessary loss of life!”
“Alright,” Yuutoko sat down, “but if we end up locked up somewhere or something, don’t say I didn’t tell ya so!”
The other being returned carrying two plates with what appeared to be some sort of pastry, “Here you are. This is called pie, specifically apple pie. I hope it’s not poisonous to you.”
“Okay, thank you,” Fire Heart accepted the pie.
“Wait! Before you eat it, eat these with it!” the other being pulled out two, brown, spherical things.
“What’re you tryin’ to pull here?” Yuutoko narrowed her eyes in suspicion.
“I’m sorry. Let me explain,” the other being held up one of the spherical objects, “These are called jabber-nuts. I created them myself. Eat one of these with a certain food, and you’ll learn the language of the culture it came from. Hopefully if you eat these with the apple pie, you’ll learn the most popular language, English.”
Yuutoko pounced on the other being like an animal, “Don’t give me that crap! I know you’re trying to poison us!”
“Stop Yuutoko! We don’t know that yet!” Fire Heart cried.
“Shut up! I know what I’m doing!” Yuutoko stared down at the other being with vicious eyes, “You have thirty seconds to explain yourself before I rip you apart!”
“I’m sorry. I know it looks suspicious but, my words speak truth. I have no malicious intent, I assure you,” the other being sighed in defeat and closed her eyes, “Do as you must. If I wasn’t destined to be here, then send me back to the stars. I’m sure the heavens will accept me back.”
“With pleasure!” Yuutoko snarled. Yuutoko got ready to strike the other being down, but Fire Heart stopped her.
“Stop! Can’t you see she’s innocent? Get off her!” Fire Heart ripped Yuutoko off the other girl, “I’m so sorry about that! My companion has self-control issues!”
“No need to worry,” the other being lifted herself off the floor, “Her actions were completely rational. I apologize for scaring you.”
“It’s okay,” Fire Heart smiled in a friendly way, “I know you weren’t trying to poison us,” Fire Heart picked up a discarded jabber-nut and blew the dirt off it, “I might as well learn the language while I’m here.”
“Don’t be stupid, Fire Heart!” Yuutoko spat, “I still don’t trust it!”
“Alright,” Fire Heart put the jabber-nut under the crust of her slice, “Since you’re being a scaredy-yashian, I’ll eat first!”
“Fine!” Yuutoko sat down and crossed her arms, “Go ahead and kill yourself, stupid Tegisaigan!”
Fire Heart fearlessly took her first bite. Yuutoko watched on with her stomach growling. She was hoping that it wasn’t poisoned just so she could fill her empty, starving stomach.
Fire Heart swallowed it and then said, “Mmm, this is really good! You should try this!”
Yuutoko looked down at her slice and sniffed it like a nervous dog. She licked the sweet filling and then took a bite herself, “Hmm… not bad, I guess. I’m certainly not dying.”
“Here,” the other being formed another jabber-nut out of the palm of her hand, “eat this as well.”
Yuutoko dropped her fork in surprise, “That’s just freaky! How do you do that?”
“I form it out of the fiber of my being,” the other being answered, “I can form these and other things out of excess energy from my body.”
“Sorry I asked,” Yuutoko took the jabber-nut, “Well, I better just get this over with!” Yuutoko swallowed the jabber-nut with a bite of pie.
The popil girl tentatively approached Fire Heart, “Can you understand me?”
“Yes,” Fire Heart responded in her newly learned language, “Admittedly, this is kinda weird. I’ve never heard this language before in my life and yet…”
The popil girl cut her off, “Whoo! It worked again, Celeste! You’re amazing!”
“Celeste?” the other being turned to the popil somewhat reproachfully, “Carman, are you trying to give me a name again?”
“Come on, you have to like Celeste!” the popil called Carman replied, “You call yourself a celestial being, so it fits!”
“I’m sorry, but I must refuse again,” the other being said distantly, “I simply don’t deserve a name.”
Carman tilted her head and put her lip out in a thoughtful way. “But that doesn’t make sense. Everything needs a name if they’re living right?”
The other girl turned away, “That may be, but I am not really living. I simply am here.”
Yuutoko watched the two with annoyance. “Not really living? You got to be kidding me. What kind of talk is that? If you’re breathing and thinking then you’re living. How hard is that?”
The other being looked at Yuutoko with slight distain. “I prefer it if you didn’t sneer at my purpose. By the by, you have crumbs on your cheeks.”
Yuutoko glowered as she quickly brushed the pie crust off her face.
Fire Heart swallowed and sought to clear the tension, “So is this your house?”
The celestial being shook her head. “Alas no, this residence is owned by a young girl’s family. Her parents are currently away, and she is attending schooling at the time.”
Yuutoko’s face shadowed  at the word ‘parents’ and muttered. “The girl still has parents?”
The being nodded. “Yes, in fact this planet is filled with parentals, it surprised me when I got here.” She pulled her bright hair back. “Being created out of mere nothingness, I really do not have anyone that I could call ‘parents’ is it the same with any of you two?”
Fire Heart shook her head. “Nah, I have a Dad… but my mom died when I was born.”
Yuutoko felt their eyes on her. “No, I don’t have parents and I really don’t remember them.” Memories of red eyes and screams echoed in Yuutoko’s mind. “Let’s just leave it at that.”
“Come to think of it, I guess I do have something I could call a ‘parent’,” the nameless girl wandered over to the window, “I was born from carbonic energy coming off this planet’s sun. The rest of it is just stellar power rushing into one place.”
“I got it!” Carman suddenly popped up, “I know what I can call you! Power Rush!”
“You wish to call me Power Rush now?”
“Yeah, you just said you were mostly a rush of power, and it’s also not exactly a name so…” Carman’s exuberance died down, “Forget it. You’re just going to push it away again. You never like my ideas!”
“Actually,” the celestial being replied, “Power Rush. Yes I kind of like it. It has a good ring to it, and it’s more a title than a name. I deem it acceptable.”
“You really like it? Seriously? Yay! Power Rush! Oh, I’m so glad you like it! Now it won’t be so weird in conversation! Hooray for Power Rush!” Carman pranced all about ecstatically.
“Well that was a whole lot of nothing,” Yuutoko replied, “Hey Power Rush, could you get me more of that pie stuff? I’m still hungry.”
“Certainly,” Power Rush picked up Yuutoko’s cleaned plate, “you look like you need it the most. I mean no offense or anything, but your appearance and actions towards Carman suggest that you are starving to death.”
Yuutoko growled, “Well you would be starving too if you weren’t fed in five days! And even when they do feed you it was just a pathetic portion. Sometimes I think they mix dirt into the gruel.”
Power Rush cocked her head. “ ‘They?’ Who are ‘they’?”
“The scientists who experimented on me, they just gave me enough to live, but not a lot to enjoy.”
Carman gasped. “I knew it! Everyone on Popil knows that Yashians are just big scary monsters that like to kill one another!”

Yuutoko looked ready to lunge. “Hold your tongue Popil or you’re just have your lips ripped off!”
Carman ran and hid behind Power Rush. Fire Heart smacked Yuutoko up-side the head. “That is not how you act towards company! Apologize at once Yuutoko!”
“Why should I? She started it!”
“Now!”
Yuutoko sneered at the popil girl and mumbled an apology.
Power Rush was unfazed. “So do tell travelers, where were you trying to go?”
“Tegisaiga, I was bringing Yuutoko her back to my planet so she could aid in my tribe’s side for battle.” Fire Heart explained. “But my companion here went and killed my men aboard the ship. And we crashed.”
Yuutoko withered a bit as she yelled. “I said I was sorry! Stop bringing it up!”
Power Rush watched the two exchanges with a stoic expression. “I see.”
“Yep, that’s how we ended up here,” Fire Heart sat back in her chair, “I just hope we don’t look too weird from the natives. From what you’ve said, it seems they haven’t had too much intergalactic contact.”
“Yes, very minimal,” Power Rush replied, “but you shouldn’t worry. Judging by your appearances, I’d say that you’d fit right in.”
Yuutoko stood up and stretched, “That’s enough to eat. I think I’ll check out this Earthian culture. Um, you said that the person who lives here is a girl right?”
“Yes, that is correct,” Power Rush replied.
“Well then, let’s see what Earthian girls wear,” Yuutoko wandered down the hall.
“Don’t go touching other people’s things!” Fire Heart scolded.
“Yeah, yeah. I don’t need a manners lesson, Mom. I’m just gathering information,” Yuutoko waved off, “Hey Power Rush, where is this girl’s room?”
“Oh you mean, Quinn’s?” Power Rush pointed to the third door on the left side, “It’s that one.”
“Oh okay, thanks a bunch,” Yuutoko burst into the room and began rummaging through clothes.
Fire Heart followed behind and leaned against the doorway, “Okay, if you’re going to rummage through other peoples’ things, at least be neat about it.”
“I’ll pick it up when I’m done,” Yuutoko pulled out a revealing tube top, “What in the name of Skius is this? This can’t be clothing unless it’s… headwear?”
“I take it you’re confused,” Power Rush wandered in.
“Yeah. What is this?” Yuutoko showed the tube top to Power Rush, “Where do you wear this?”
“Oh, that is what is called a ‘tube top’. You wear it like a shirt,” Power Rush explained.
“This is a shirt that girls wear?” Yuutoko cringed and dropped it, “Ew! That’s not decent at all!”
“No, she says it helps to ‘reel in the boys’.”
“Oh great! All Earthian boys are perverts aren’t they?”
“Some are, I suppose. However, I wouldn’t label so harshly.”
“Well, you won’t catch me dead in that outfit! Do Earthian men wear something more… modest?”
“Yes, for the most part.”
“Fine then, I’m dressing like a man!” Yuutoko wandered out, “I’ll see what else there is around here.”
Yuutoko walked into the living room and started investigating the television, “Huh, I wonder what this device is.”
Carman hopped onto the couch and grabbed the remote, “It’s called T.V!”
Carman turned on the television causing Yuutoko to jump, “Ack! Wh-what is that thing! What is it doing?”
“Out of the way!” Carman responded, “I’m trying to watch!”
Yuutoko calmed down and sat beside Carman, “So what’s it for?”
“Um, entertainment I guess. Now shh!” Carman remained transfixed on the screen.
“Ah, so it broadcasts images for entertainment. I see,” Yuutoko sat back comfortably, “This seems like a good way to learn. What better way to learn about a society than through entertainment.”
“Be quiet!” Carman shot, “What do you not understand about ‘shh, I’m trying to watch’?”
Fire Heart came in behind her, “So, what’re you doing now? Whatever it is, at least you’re behaving yourself.”
“Quiet Tegisaigan! I’m trying to watch these broadcasts! They will fill me with such knowledge!” Yuutoko remained focused on the television.
“Really?” Fire Heart watched with a critical gaze, “It looks pretty dumb to me.”
“Shh, I’m trying to watch!” Yuutoko and Carman said in unison. Fire Heart gave up and watched with the two others.
They continued to watch television for the rest of the day, not noticing the time passing. It was sometime in the afternoon when the door opened and a teenage girl with chocolate colored hair and deep green eyes walked through.
“Hey guys, I’m home,” she called.
“Quinn!” Carman bounced to her feet, “You’re home! Did you bring me anything?”
“What? No, of course not!” Quinn responded, “I just came back from school! Why would you ask that?”
Carman looked down ashamed, “Well, I was just wondering.”
Quinn instinctively wandered into the living room and shrieked in shock at the sight of Fire Heart and Yuutoko, “Who are these people? What are they doing in my house?”
“Oh Quinn, you’re home,” Power Rush looked up from the poetry she was writing, “These people come from other worlds. Their ship crash-landed up on the cliffs. I thought it was only fair that I help them. I apologize if it upsets you.”
“More aliens? First you guys don’t exist, and now you’re all popping up like rabbits!” Quinn groaned.
“No! You don’t understand! They looked so sad, so I had to take them home!” Carman exclaimed in defense.
“I’m sorry Carman, but I had a hard enough time explaining this whole thing to my parents! I mean, this is my house, not a home for lost aliens!” Quinn stated.
“Oh, you were talking about them! I thought you were talking about… You see when you said rabbits I…” Carman looked away, “Never mind.”
“I’m sorry if we’re intruding,” Fire Heart bowed her head respectfully, “If we must leave, then we will.”
“Now wait a minute,” Quinn put her hand up, “You know, since you’re so polite, maybe my parents will let you stay a little while.”
“D-do you think so?” Fire Heart replied gratefully, “Thank you! I would be so grateful if I could stay until I find my feet!”
“It’s no problem, and besides,” Quinn leaned in, “I love that outfit!”
“Really? This isn’t one of my most inspired outfits. I’ve made better in the past.”
“You made that? That’s incredible!”
“Not really. All Tegisaigan women are required to learn to sew. It’s traditional.”
“I like you already! You’re modest and you have a great sense of style!” Quinn looked over at Yuutoko, “You… not so much. Seriously, I’m not one for picking at fashion faux-pas, but it looks like you broke out of prison.”
“Actually it was a mental institution,” Yuutoko corrected, “On my planet, they like to perform experiments on us. They did such unspeakable things to me there and beat me if I failed. Fortunately, Fire Heart here busted me out and I killed a good number of them! No, kill isn’t strong enough; I’d like to say eviscerated! Needless to say, it was satisfying!”
Quinn laughed nervously, “You’re... you’re joking right?”
Fire Heart laughed along for a minute, “Believe me, I wish she was.”
“Oh,” Quinn took a nervous gulp, “Um, I’m sorry if I acted so rude before. No hard feelings right?”
“Oh don’t worry, I won’t harm a single hair on your head,” Yuutoko said with a smirk, “The Tegisaigan has me on a pretty tight leash. You might want to watch yourself, though. Any number of little annoyances could set me off. Once that happens, I might not be able to stop!”
“That’s enough!” Fire Heart wacked Yuutoko on the back of her head, “She’s giving us a place to stay! Quit scaring her!”
“Ow!” Yuutoko rubbed the back of her head, “You see? She cuts me no slack at all!”
“We interrupt this program to give you breaking news!” the television announced, “A home on Darwin Court has been robbed and a family assaulted! Three people are in critical condition and two children have been confirmed dead!” Yuutoko seemed to tense up as the news continued, “The suspect is still at large! Keep all children inside and do not go out alone! I repeat, keep all children inside and do not go out alone!”
“That just pisses me off!” Yuutoko snarled, “Who the hell would do that?”
“This isn’t your problem,” Fire Heart placated, “Please don’t get involved.”
“Whatever,” Yuutoko rose, “I’m going out for some air.”
“Yuutoko! Didn’t you hear what I said?” Fire Heart chased after her, “Don’t get involved! You’ll only draw attention to us!”
“Don’t try to stop me, Fire Heart!” Yuutoko began to run, “I’ll be doing the earthians a favor!”
Despite being a skeletal creature, Yuutoko ran at an incredible speed. Not even Fire Heart, a harshly trained warrior, could catch up. Yuutoko dashed away out of sight and Fire Heart gave up.
Quinn caught up to Fire Heart, “What does she think she’s doing? Doesn’t she remember that there’s a killer on the loose?”
“Yes,” Fire Heart responded, “That’s who she’s trying to find.”
“We have to stop her then!” Quinn exclaimed, “She’ll be killed if we don’t!”
“Someone will die if we don’t stop her,” Fire Heart turned away, “but it won’t be her.”
Yuutoko marched down a relatively empty street. All the shops were closed and there was no one about except the occasional passing car. She could see people staring at her from windows, unsure whether to be terrified or concerned for her. Yuutoko ignored those eyes and continued walking, determined to find the killer even though she didn’t know where to look or what the killer looked like. She had walked for several miles before she saw a shadow dart into an ally way. Yuutoko followed the figure hoping that it was the right man.
The man saw Yuutoko and dropped his guard, “Oh, you’re just a kid. A damn ugly one at that.”
Yuutoko spotted the blood on the man’s clothes and growled, “You killed those children, didn’t you? That’s a pretty shitty thing to do!”
“You better go back home kid,” the man pulled out a bloodstained knife, “I ain’t afraid to kill a third one!”
“So you admit your crime!” Yuutoko snarled, “Now you will pay for it!”
“I’m getting sick of you!” the man shoved the knife into Yuutoko’s belly, “Just die!”
Yuutoko flinched for a second and then began to cackle madly, “Did you honestly think that would kill me, pathetic earthian?”
The man stumbled back terrified, “Y-you ain’t human! W-what the hell are you?”
Yuutoko pulled the knife out of her belly and grinned wildly, “To you, I am your executioner! Now how should you go? Let’s make it nice, slow, and painful, shall we? It’d be pretty funny to watch you die at the mercy of your own weapon!”
“Please stop! I’ll do anything! Please let me go!” the killer whimpered.
“Let you go? After all you’ve done? I don’t think so!” Yuutoko dragged the knife’s blade across the man’s face, “Now then, where should I stab you first? How about your knee caps? That way you can’t run anywhere!” Yuutoko stabbed both kneecaps with enough force to shatter them; he screamed obscenities at her as she continued to stab and slash, “A cut here! A knick there! Ha, ha! This is a riot!” it wasn’t long until Yuutoko’s victim had died; she spat on the corpse and said, “That’s right. You’d better rot, bastard.” The high pitched squeal of a siren pierced the air, causing Yuutoko to run off.
Fire Heart and Quinn had circled around the city a number of times in Quinn’s car before they finally caught sight of Yuutoko. They were simultaneously relieved and disgusted by her appearance.
“There you are! Do you have any idea how worried we were about you?” Fire Heart exclaimed.
“What? It’s not like I was in any real danger,” Yuutoko smirked, “The guy was easy to kill. He may have been one of my easiest kills yet.”
“She wasn’t talking about that! She was talking about the police!” Quinn chimed in, “If they caught you, they’d find out that you’re an alien! They’d cage you like an animal and cut you open to see what you’re made of!”
“Well gee,” Yuutoko got in the car, “caged like an animal and cut open? Why, that’s never happened to me except for every single day of my life! Why do you care so much anyway?”
“It would be wrong to just leave you,” Fire Heart reasoned, “Unlike you, I actually have a conscience!”
“Unlike me? I have a conscience too, ya know!” Yuutoko shot, “I couldn’t let that guy live after what he did! Killing children, that’s the lowest form of shit I know!”
“Wait. So you’re telling me that you actually have a moral compass?” Fire Heart questioned.
“Sure do. It may point in a different direction than yours, but it’s there all right!”
“I thought the institution would have extracted it from you.”
“Yeah, well, I guess they really can’t kill all yashianity in a person. Now that I think about it, it’s kind of funny the way they failed!”
“Well at any rate, let’s get you home and cleaned up before Quinn’s parents come home.”
“I’m surprised. After all the people I’ve killed today, you still wanna keep me around. You know, most people would have put me down like a mad animal.”
“Then again, I’m not most people. I have a talent of telling guilty from innocent in people’s eyes. It’s true that the guilt to your crimes is written all over your eyes, but there’s certainly no evil there. Your eyes are sort of like the eyes of a vigilante or something.”
“I have to say, I’m kinda flattered,” Yuutoko switched the subject, “Once we get home, do you think you could dress this wound or something. It’s beginning to sting.”
“Of course,” Fire Heart smiled in a friendly way, “It’s traditional that Tegisaigan women are trained in first aid and medicine.”
“Sheesh, is there anything you can’t do?”
“Well, I can’t whistle.”
“That’s stupid! What else can’t you do?”
“Lemme think for a minute.”
“Ha! You’re a slow thinker then!”
“Or perhaps I’m just so close to perfect, I can’t even think of any more flaws!”
Yuutoko chuckled.
They soon made it back to the house. As they got near the driveway Quinn noticed two cars parked there. She cursed under her breath. “Shit, they’re home. Now how am I supposed to explain about you guys?”
Fire Heart pondered a bit. “Well how did you explain about Power-Rush and Carmen?”
“The truth…kinda. My parents don’t really buy the whole ‘alien’ thing. So I just say that they’re foreign exchange students that need a place to stay for a bit. They were fine with it at first, but like they told me before, ‘this isn’t a home for aliens’ you guys are just going to have to find a permanent place to stay soon.”
Fire Heart nodded. “I know, but just a couple days here and I’m sure I will find us some way to get some money and soon a house or something.”
Quinn parked behind one of the cars and turned the engine off. “Okay, so how should we sneak Yuutoko- Hey! You better not have gotten any blood on my seats!”
Yuutoko sighed, “Don’t worry your pretty face, most of the blood is on my hand.” She pulled away her hand that was resting on her stomach, it was coated with scarlet.
Quinn looked away with a queasy expression, “Okay, okay got it. Fire Heart please take care of that.”
“Got it,” Fire Heart pulled a medical needle and thread from a satchel around her waist, “Hold still, Yuutoko. This may sting a little. Fortunately, it looks like he missed your stomach.”
“I just took a knife to the stomach. How much could that little needle possibly hurt—Yeowtch!” Yuutoko shrieked.
“I said hold still!” Fire Heart continued to stitch, “And try not to scream like that. We don’t want to draw attention.”
“Okay. Just please be a little gentler with that,” Yuutoko held her breath until she was all stitched up.
“There,” Fire heart began rubbing disinfectant on the wound, “I think you’ll live. Not so bad is it?”
“Yeah. Sure,” tears were still beaded up in Yuutoko’s eyes.
Quinn took a deep breath. “Okay hold on, I’ll go warn them first.” She left the two behind her and headed up to the house. She opened the door and saw that her parents were already waiting for her. “Oh… hi.”
Her mother tapped her foot, “Quinn I noticed that there are two people in our driveway, more of these ‘aliens’ that you keep telling us about? And the one with the red on her shirt, did she eat ketchup or something?” Her mother said with a little chuckle. Her father however, looked at his daughter with a firm gaze. “Quinn, I thought I told you before that I will not be having any more freeloaders in the house, they will just have to go somewhere else. Seriously why does the school have so many unorganized teachers if they can’t find these kids homes? Then where is our tax money going to?”
Quinn knew to be silent, it was better to let her father blow off steam before she said anything. Once he exhausted his words Quinn spoke up. “I know dad, like you said before this isn’t a group home, but they just need a place to stay until they find a job, then they’ll get enough money to find their own place.”
Her mother pursed her lips, “Job? But won’t they be too busy with school to do that? And is it possible for foreigners to get a job while on the exchange program?”
Quinn shrugged, “I think it’s allowed. But I can’t just kick them out. Please let them stay for a bit.” She turned to her father and pouted, and to add to it, big green puppy dog eyes. “Please daddy?”
Her father turned away, a bit embarrassed to be reeled in like that. “Alright, alright, they can all stay. But for one more month, after that they have to go take it up with the school!”
Quinn hugged her father, “Thanks daddy!”
Her mother intervened with a question, “But these two new ones had better learn the rules of the house and always be on their best behavior, understand? I don’t want any mishaps.”
Quinn immediately thought of Yuutoko, who, not even a day has gone by and she’s already killed a human. Quinn put on a fake smile. “Don’t worry mother, I’ll make sure they know.”
“When can we meet the other two?” Quinn’s father asked.
Quinn swallowed her nervousness. “In a bit, one of them is really tired and a bit jetlagged, I think she just needs a shower and some rest. Just ah- go about your business and we’ll see you down at dinner.” She turned away and ran outside to meet with Fire Heart and Yuutoko. Yuutoko was the first to notice her. “So? How’d it go?”
Quinn bit her bottom lip. “You guys can stay but only for a month, so you’ll have to find jobs. And while in this house you’ll have to be on your best behavior, okay? Please don’t call attention to yourself, so no killing!”
Yuutoko glared, “I’ll stop when they stop.”
Fire Heart bopped Yuutoko on the head. “Don’t worry, we’ll be good.”
Quinn let out a relieved sigh. “Okay, now I told my parents that you were jetlagged and need a shower, so uh- can you clean up Yuutoko and make her look presentable?”
Yuutoko got up, “I can clean myself thank you very much!”
Quinn took a step back, “I didn’t mean it like that it’s just that, well you are quite the… ah how should I say this?”
Yuutoko looked at her long finger nails and the blood stains on her shirt. “You don’t have to say it....like a monster, right?”
Quinn shook her head, “No, no, no I wasn’t going to-“
“Save it, I know.”
Fire Heart stepped in between them. “So… the shower then?”
“Ah yea right follow me!”
As far as crashed aliens go, Fire Heart and Yuutoko were some of the luckier ones. They found a planet that was not deadly to them, a place to stay, and a native who would not reveal their true identities. But as lucky as they had been thus far, Fire Heart knew that with Yuutoko’s behavior, it would not last long.
Human customs could be hard to get used to, but just watch some t.v and you'll fit in just fine.
